{"id":816,"date":"2018-06-03T08:30:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-03T18:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaii.concon.info\/?page_id=816"},"modified":"2018-10-29T07:46:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T17:46:43","slug":"advocacy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/hawaii.concon.info\/?page_id=816","title":{"rendered":"Democratic &#038; Republican Party Platforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Summary<\/h3>\n<p>The Democratic Party Platform for 2018 opposed calling a state constitutional convention; the Republican Party Platform took no position.<\/p>\n<h3>Democratic Party Platform<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Democratic Party of Hawaii&#8217;s\u00a0annual state convention held between May 9 and May 18 , 2018, its Resolutions Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/12KSiFwwRtSM7Uwn86nyKmevK5dRpLIWPkXv_h7c7M_U\/edit\">rejected<\/a> by a 4-9-1 vote the following resolution calling for support of a state constitutional convention. See <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiidemocrats.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Resolutions-Committee-Report-2018.pdf\">Report of the 2018 Convention Resolutions Committee<\/a>, May 19, 2018. The explanation for the no vote provided by the committee was: &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee could not reach a consensus on the purpose of such a convention. \u00a0\u201cJust because\u201d did not seem to have relevance.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Supporting a Hawai\u02bbi Constitutional Convention in 2018 <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The most recent Hawai\u02bbi state constitutional convention was held in 1978, forty year ago; and <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, The State of Hawai\u02bbi has changed dramatically in the last forty years; and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, A state constitutional convention would give power to the people to directly propose changes to the state constitution; and <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, The Democratic Party of Hawai\u02bbi believes in importance of democracy and in the rule of the people; and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas, Any proposed changes would have to be ratified by people of Hawai\u02bbi in a direct vote, providing a strong safeguard against attempts to change the Hawai\u02bbi state constitution in ways that would be detrimental to the public; therefore, be it <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resolved,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That the Democratic Party of Hawai\u02bbi supports holding a Constitutional Convention and urges its members to vote yes on authorizing a Constitutional Convention; and be it further <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordered<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to members of the Democratic Party who hold elected state political offices. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Republican Party Platform<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Republican Party platform published after the Republican Party of Hawaii&#8217;s\u00a0annual state convention held between May 4 and May 6, 2018 didn&#8217;t mention the state constitutional convention issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary The Democratic Party Platform for 2018 opposed calling a state constitutional convention; the Republican Party Platform took no position.
